Dr. Patrick Paul Walsh

Patrick Paul Walsh received his Ph.D. in Economics from the London School of Economics in 1994. He is Vice President of Education and Director of the SDG Academy at the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), while also serving as Full Professor of Global Affairs and Sustainable Futures at University College Dublin (UCD), where he directs the M.Sc. in Sustainable Development.

He has served as President (2022–2025) and long-time Honorary Secretary of the Statistical and Social Inquiry Society of Ireland (SSISI). His career includes professorships at Trinity College Dublin and visiting positions at KU Leuven, Harvard University, and Columbia University.

Prof. Walsh has been deeply engaged with the UN 2030 Agenda, contributing to the UN Global Sustainable Development Reports (2014, 2015) and serving as a Senior Adviser to SDSN during the negotiations on “Transforming our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.”

He has supervised 30 Ph.D. students, published widely in leading journals, and continues to focus on education, research, and policy outreach in support of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Dr. Nurul Ain Abu Bakar

Dr. Nurul Ain Abu Bakar is a distinguished Senior Research Officer at the Climate Change Program within the Agrobiodiversity and Environment Research Centre, Malaysia Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI). She has been working with MARDI since 2011. With a solid foundation in microbiology and a specialization in environmental biotechnology, Dr. Nurul Ain has dedicated over 13 years to advancing research and innovation in her field. Her academic journey began with a Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology from the National University of Malaysia in 2010. She furthered her studies with a Master’s degree in Microbiology from the same institution in 2015, and in 2023, she earned her PhD in Environmental Biotechnology from Universiti Putra Malaysia.

Her extensive academic training has equipped her with the expertise to tackle complex environmental challenges through innovative biotechnological solutions. Her remarkable research work spans various significant projects, including greenhouse gas inventories for the agricultural sector, low-carbon farming models, refining biomass, life cycle assessments and techno-economic analysis. She has made substantial contributions to the scientific community through her numerous publications in high-impact journals, including studies on the environmental impact assessment of rice mill waste valorization, life cycle assessment of unmilled rice production, and structural modification of paddy grain for glucose production. She has also authored chapters in books on composting technology and rice straw degradation. Her work has been recognized with several awards from the MARDI Science & Technology Exhibition (MSTE).  In addition to her role at MARDI, she is also currently serving as the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Officer at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM), where she provides technical expertise and policy support on sustainable agriculture, climate change mitigation, and net-zero carbon initiatives.
